Aloha Spirit at Kohala Canoe Club
I signed up with the Kohala Canoe Club a few months ago. We go out three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, after meeting at the Kawaihae Harbor at 6 AM. We paddle thirty minutes to a nearby beach and then relax; stretching out, swimming, talking story and then head back all before 7:30-8:00 AM. What glorious way to begin the day! I highly recommend you join us, or any canoe club and you can join us for a small fee of $10.00!
I have been blessed through this experience because I not only get the opportunity to paddle amongst dolphins and turtles, but it is an awesome workout. It’s a great way to meet some wonderful people too. When I began this adventure, I was welcomed with the true “Aloha Spirit” and enjoyed meaningful conversations with the club members. The night before a canoe paddle, I am excited with the expectation of meeting new members and having yet another exciting and wonderful time learning more about these extraordinary people.
This is truly awesome, but the cherry on top of these outings is Whale Season. Wow what an exhilarating feeling when the whales breach next to the canoe!
The original, crafted Hawaiian Canoe glides gently on the azure water with just a whisper. You become one with the water, the trades, and the awakening heavens…the senses come alive…the ocean’s cool freshness as the canoe’s movement and the 6 to 12 paddlers with oneness and camaraderie slice into the blueness of the sea. All together in concert with nature’s gifts! It is truly a buffet for the senses! My mind is stimulated with the realization of God’s blessing of creation that we all share. The “HA” breath, on us all, as we breathe it in, then exhale…the “HA” of life.
On Wednesdays, we share a breakfast potluck. Can you already smell the aroma of the Kona Coffee? The homemade goodies prepared by the paddlers are so delicious and such an added treat. I invite you into our (my) world…….All you need to do is show up.
Explore this breathing exercise to balance your right and left-brain hemisphere:
Alternate Nostril Breathing
With Alternate Nostril Breathing, you inhale through one nostril, retain the breath, and then exhale through the other nostril in a ratio of 5:8:5. Count to five when inhaling, hold for the count of eight then exhale to the count of five. Use your thumb and your two smallest fingers.
Inhale 5 counts through the left nostril closing the right.
Hold the breath, closing both nostrils, swallow, and bring your chin to your chest, hold for 8 counts. Exhale 5 counts through the right nostril keeping the left nostril closed.
Breathe in through the right nostril keeping the left nostril closed.
Hold the breath, closing both nostrils. Breathe out through the left nostril keeping the right closed. Start with three rounds and build up to twenty rounds.
If you wish, feel free to close your eyes and focus your awareness on the space between your eyes brow, your third eye.
