The Good, the Bad and the Smelly! | Hawaii Life’s Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup

The Good:

On Friday, October 22, 2021, twenty volunteers joined together with the same passion and goal in sight — to help keep debris out of our oceans and roadways. We cleaned Hawaii Life’s Adopt-A-Highway section, which falls between Nalu Street in Waimanalo and Sea Life Park on the East side of the island of Oahu.

I am so thankful that we have a community that not only cares about our aina but helps to make a positive impact. Our group was able to collect rubbish to fill approximately 50 bags. We also organized some other bagged garbage that was already on the roadside when we arrived. We helped organize approximately 75 bags (along with other junk), to be collected safely from the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Division.

The Bad:

It seems to be a job that is never done. New trash will be there tomorrow, next week, and so on.

The Smelly:

Yes, it’s not a pretty job but that doesn’t stop us from holding our breath when we need to and getting the job done! We were all up for the challenge and we conquered.

Do You Wonder – What’s Inside All Those Full Garbage Bags?

This time around, we found a large amount of batteries (sizes like AA, AAA), masks, wipes, plastic bags, car parts, clothes, plastic food containers, fast food cups, utensils, glass and plastic bottles, broken glass, suitcases and the usual cigarette butts.

Mahalo to the Volunteers!

A big MAHALO to the volunteers who came to help out:
