Dave’s Big Island Real Estate Life

Today (let’s face it, almost every day) is a great day to show property! I’m lucky enough to be a real estate agent on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Rainbows are frequent visitors!

Recently, in three days of touring with a buyer, we looked at over 35 properties to help him find the right area on the big Island to meet his needs.

Is an ocean view important to you?

Because the island is so large, we have something for just about everyone. That can both be a positive and a negative. It’s great because there is a great variety of properties in different price ranges and climates to choose from. It can also be overwhelming if you’re not sure exactly what you want.

Did you know there are zebras and donkeys on the Big Island?

A Little Advice For Buyers

REALTORS know you are searching online to find the perfect house and we appreciate that as it can cut down on drive and showing times (which means less time out of your vacation looking at property!). The Internet has become a huge help for doing preliminary research. What the Internet does not give you, however, is the benefit of a REALTOR living on island who can give you personalized advice about a particular area.

A REALTOR who knows the hyper-local aspects of an area can give you the kind of feedback you will be looking for when it comes to making a decision about what area is right for you. The Internet won’t be able to point out to you exactly where the wind line stops, how the clouds form in the morning, when the Tradewinds pick up, or even what it looks like when you’re actually on the property looking around. With WebCams, overlay maps, and Google Street view you can get a lot of data, but it is not the same as being in a car and seeing it for yourself.

I recommend looking on the Internet to get a general idea of the houses and areas, and then talking to an agent about what it is you want. Do you want a condo at the resorts, or do you want a single-family home in a “real neighborhood?” Do you enjoy the privacy of living remotely on a large parcel of land, or do you need to be closer to town? Do you want to be in a hot and dry climate, or would you rather enjoy cooler temperatures and more rainfall?

If you can’t figure out the answers to these questions online, that’s where the real estate agent can help. Sometimes we might literally drive all around the island for three days looking and looking and looking. Some might say that’s the “worst case scenario.” I’ve got to tell you, when it’s a day like today, it’s not such a bad thing.
