Black Rock Maui – Kaanapali’s Key Attraction

I’ve been posting on Kaanapali for a couple months now and have yet to mention the biggest draw to the area. Black Rock, Maui.

Sunset at Black Rock, Maui

For those of you who haven’t had the chance to visit, Black Rock is located in front of the Sheraton Hotel, and is not the easiest place to get to. While all Hawaii beaches are public, the presence of so many hotels can making parking scarce, particularly with the numerous signs reading “No Beach Parking.” A little secret…Get to Black Rock early, and park behind Whalers Village shopping center.

As there can be some really strong currents, snorkeling is not always advised. Be sure to check with local dive shops along the beach that day as to ocean conditions. The main draw for Maui’s youth (and a few daring adults), however, is jumping off the rocks—quite fun and a huge rush, so long as you watch for divers below.

The ceremonial lighting of the torches, at Black Rock

It’s always worth it to stay for sunset and watch the torches being lit along the top of Black Rock.

When the currents aren’t strong, snorkeling can be great

With so much to take in, plan on spending the whole day there. But always be mindful of the ocean and the power of Mother Nature. The area is very beautiful, but can be very dangerous. Never go in the water alone.
