From Kahului take Hana Hwy (Rte 36) to Haleakala Hwy (Rte 37) intersection and start heading up the hill. You’ll take this road all the way to Hana. Along the way, you will be treated to many vistas and delights, making the three-hour journey pass quickly.
As you head up the mountain, you will pass through the farmlands of Kula. In Hawaiian, Kula means “open meadows,” which are full of beautiful flowers, fruits, and vegetables. If you’re feeling hungry, stop at La Provence for a croissant or crepe and enjoy the garden patio with gorgeous bi-coastal views.
Just a bit farther is the famous Grandma’s Coffee shop and bakery. Continue on through rolling hills reminiscent of Ireland to Ulupalakua, which is the home of the Ulupalakua Ranch and the Maui Wine Tasting Room.
As you leave the forested Upcountry area, you’ll start a descent towards to ocean taking you through Kaupo where you can stop at the Kaupo Store.
After more bumpy driving and a descent to the ocean, you’ll come to where you can see Palapala Ho’omau church where Charles Lindbergh is buried.
A short distance away is Ohe’o, also know as the Seven Sacred Pools, which is part of Haleakala National Park. You can check the NPS website to see if the pools/hike are open. They are closed when there has been a lot of rain. Heading towards Hana town there will be several vistas and places to stop and swim.
Note that the road is narrow in spots and you may have to yield to oncoming traffic. The roads are designed to fit life in Hana…slow and easy going! Before you reach the town of Hana you will pass many bridges, waterfalls, and natural pools. A family favorite for swimming and cliff/boulder jumping is Waioka Pond or Venus Pool.
