With the Fourth of July around the corner, many people in Hawaii are getting ready to hit the beach, barbecue, and enjoy their day. If you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered how you can get your own fun fireworks for the holiday.
We all see the grand firework shows in Waikiki every weekend, so we know fireworks are allowed to exist in Hawaii, but for your average resident, you have to jump threw a few hoops to get your hands on them.
If you see aerial fireworks and sparklers being used by residents in residential neighborhoods, those fireworks are more than likely illegal.
“The possession and use of fountains, sparklers, aerial fireworks, and other consumer fireworks are illegal and not permitted.” – City & County of Honolulu
You cannot buy anything other than firecrackers in Hawaii, however a permit is required to purchase them. Chapter 20, Revised Ordinances of Honolulu requires that you purchase firecracker permits no later than ten days before they are used.
According to the Honolulu Fire Department, firecrackers are perfectly legal, which are not the same as the giant aerial fireworks you see in Waikiki, but they are still something fun for the family to enjoy.
You can apply for a permit as long as you’re 18 years old and have a valid ID.
Your permit enables you to make a one-time purchase of 5,000 firecrackers. Firecracker use is also only allowed during specific times on specific holidays, such as Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, and Chinese New Year, and can be granted permission for use at special events. Other than that, your permit does not allow you to use firecrackers on any given day.
