Every month the new housing stats come out for the island of Oahu and generally speaking the prices continue to rise. If you are looking to buy on this beautiful island the home prices can come with some intense sticker shock. For the most part, the properties on the Windward side of the island can be some of the most expensive on Oahu. This is also true for the areas closest to town as that is where a large amount of the workforce and military report daily. The trend you start to see is the further west you venture towards the Leeward side of the island the lower the pricing becomes. You will find larger, newer properties as you move towards the hotter dryer side of the island. This is especially true for the areas the furthest west in Waianae.
Stunning Coastline Views & Amazing Beaches
As you continue on H1 West past the resort area of Ko Olina, the expressway ends and the beautiful ocean and mountain views begin. This is the start of the beautiful Waianae coastline. Unobstructed ocean views are in one direction with the Waianae mountain range in the other. This is absolutely one of the prettiest drives and views on the island. A new public library, roads, and construction seem to be easily noticeable. This is also where you can find world-class surfing and arguably some of the best beaches on the island. One of the best of the best is Makaha Beach. Soft sand, blue water, and amazing views all around make this a local favorite.

Predictable Traffic
The not-so-great part is you notice limited egress in and out of the area. As you getting further into the area you enter the Makaha areas. This is the furthest west on the island you can go and this ends at the Ka’ena Point State Park. This is a bird sanctuary, a great hike and a state park all rolled into one. With that said you are the now the furthest west you can go on the island and with limited roadways this can also be a traffic nightmare.
Traffic on the island is also fairly predictable. The traffic heading into and out of town is the worst early morning and early afternoon. With numerous street lights and heavy traffic one issue such as weather, emergency or an accident can be catastrophic for traffic.

Reasonable Price Points
This is also the part of the island you will find some of the more reasonable price points. This is from building such as Makaha Beach Cabanas that offer ocean and mountain views from every one of the units with prices in the $200-$300K range all the way to unobstructed direct ocean view legacy estates for $2 million and up. Certainly the term affordable and millions don’t go hand in hand but if you took the same oceanfront properties and moved it windward they can easily reach 10 million plus.
This side of the island offers new construction, multi-family homes, and the fixer upper properties in a wide range of price points. Generally speaking, you can find a more reasonably priced properties in this area. There is a great sense of community, shopping restaurants and much more to discover in Waianae. The condos and homes run a huge spectrum of pricing but they are typically a lower price then you can find anywhere on Oahu. If you haven’t been to the area its worth the drive. If you have been on the island for years it’s certainly time to take a second look and see all that has changed out west.

Stop encouraging more people to move to the Wai’anae Coast. Increasing population only increases problems.
