Adventures of Sacred Waipio Valley – The Valley of the Kings

Aloha dear friends,

Seven years ago, I had an opportunity to live down in Waipio Valley on Big Island Hawaii, I lived and played for six months. This was an incredible, life-enhancing experience.

Waipio means “curved water” and is one of six valleys on the northern part of the island along the Hamakua Coast. It’s there you’ll see lush green landscape and epic natural eye candy.

Lush Waipio Valley

At the Waipio lookout point, you can park your car or drive down a steep hill. A high clearance vehicle is required to drive down, or you can take the adventurous route and hike down to the bottom of the hill. I have also hitchhiked down and up the hill. Everyone is really friendly and happy to give rides.

When you make a left at the bottom of the hill, a little way along, you will see two 2,000-foot waterfalls.  “Hiilawe Falls” is the most beautiful sight I have ever seen! The valley is filled with edible landscaping, friendly wild horses, little rivers, and streams.

There are lots of Taro fields throughout. Taro is a traditional Hawaiian staple food, and the stem is used to make poi, and the root is like potato and can be enjoyed in many different ways.

When you make a right at the bottom of the hill, you will reach a stunning black sand beach with powerful waves.
Many traditional “Heiau” (sacred places of worship for Native Hawaiians) populate the valley. Passing visitors bless altars with gifts of fruit and flowers.

On the far side of the black sand beach, there is a trail heading up the opposite face of the valley called the “Z trail.” When you reach the top of Z trail, you will be greeted by massive ancient trees and world-class coffee groves. Needless to say, this is well worth the hike.

A dear friend of mine Lulu that I met in Sedona, Arizona was visiting Waipio Valley over 15 years ago, and she found a Cacao tree (yes, that is what chocolate is made of), and as she was sitting under the tree enjoying eating some cacao nuts and had a vision of creating and sharing the power of chocolate with the world. Today Lulu is a very successful Oompa Loompa and the founder of Lulu‘s Chocolates.

You will see them in most health food stores across America, please do yourself a favor and try them out they are to die for. Lulu, thank you for bringing your passion to our world and make our world a sweeter place.

Waipio Valley is, by far, one of the most beautiful places in the world.

When you come to Hawaii and visit sacred places with an open heart, magic happened, and the Island revels her beauty in ways beyond our imagination.
