Maui

May 2015 is the 60th Annual National Bike Month

With breathtaking views, perfect weather, and abundant roads and highways, Maui is the perfect place to take that cycling holiday. Virtually every public area of this island is accessible by bicycle. It just depends upon how adventurous you are. You can take a scenic ride along the ocean or ride both down and up (yes, that says up) Haleakala. I met an adventurous soul from Oregon last night that rode up the mountain this morning. I cannot wait to hear how that went. Whether you prefer tarmac or dirt, Maui is the place to ride. So get out there, be safe, and have fun.

One organization that was created for cyclists, by cyclists is the Maui Bicycling League. Maui Bicycling League was founded to promote all types of cycling, to raise public awareness on the need to share our roads and to support legislation that will make Maui a better place to ride.

Event Schedule

Following is a list of activities sponsored by the Maui Bicycling League for May:

May 11 to 15 — Bike to Work Week

Maui Bicycling League will be holding prize drawings for Maui residents who ride their bike to work once or more during this week. Items donated by several local businesses will be offered as prizes. Download an entry form.

May 17 — West Maui Bike Ride

This free guided ride starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 17 and continues through 10 a.m. and will depart from Paradise Grill in Kaanapali. A no-host breakfast will follow at Paradise Grill. The West Maui Bike Ride is co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise, the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, and Maui Bicycling League.

May 23 — Ride of Silence

The Ride of Silence will commemorate Kihei cyclist Karl Hagen, who was killed in 2014 by a pick-up truck driver on the Piilani Highway, and it serves to raise awareness about safe driving around cyclists. The ride will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, and will start at the entrance of Mokulele Bike Pathway near Target. Riders will ride on the pathway to Kihei and back. Riders are asked to wear white and respectfully ride in silence.

May 31 — Central Maui Bike Ride

The Central Maui Bike Ride begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 31 at the Kaunoa Senior Center. This ride is ideal for children and beginners and is on a mostly flat course. Riders will ride on the pathway and roadway shoulder to Island Grocery in Kahului and back. An optional ride to Baby Beach in Sprecklesville is also available.

The Maui Bicycling League also is preparing public service announcements and educational programs to educate both bicyclists and drivers to safely share our roadways. A free bike safety program will be offered at Kalama School by Krank Cycles with support from the Maui Bicycling League.

Awesome post! I saw that Puamana unit a few weeks ago – they did a fantastic job on it. Puamana is such a great way to be in Lahaina. Wish I could bike more up here but the roads and rain are not kind to cyclists.

Hey Liam. I can put you in touch with some avid cyclists in your area that ride Sunday’s. Haiku is challenging but not impassable. 😉 Puamana unit 167-2 is my favorite recent remodel here. Beautifully and tastefully done.
