Visitors to Kauai may not be familiar with the Puhi neighborhood. It is on the south end of Lihue, in a fairly quiet area with minimal through traffic. When I first moved to Kauai, I had not considered living in this area, but now that I am here, I just love it! Here are my 5 top reasons why:
1. Central Location
Kauai is not a huge island, but most of our services are clustered in Lihue. The longer I’ve been on the island, the more I appreciate the conveniences of being central. Having Costco and Safeway within biking distance means I can make dinner happen quickly and effortlessly without having to plan too far in advance. Likewise, having Ross, Macy’s, Pier One, and other major stores within minutes means when I need something for my kids, or staging a home, it is not a huge ordeal. County services like driver’s licensing, car registration, and getting a permit for camping are also readily accessible. Being within minutes of the movie theatre is also great — sometimes it gets too hot, and we need a break from the beach! It is also easy to get to the north shore, south shore, or Kapaa. Everything is at your fingertips in this very central location.
2. Kalapaki Bay
Iconic Kalapaki Bay is less than 3 miles from the Puhi area. There are sand volleyball courts and several beachside restaurants for entertainment. It is a nice protected bay, perfect for swimming and paddleboarding. It gets good swell for surfing too and is generally not over-crowded. You can also catch outdoor movies on a big screen at the Marriott on Tuesday evenings, which is fun.
3. Hokuala Trail System
Just up the hill from Kalapaki Bay is a newer development, anchored by Timbers Resort and Hokuala Golf Course. There are 400 acres of land surrounding the resort with paved trails. It is a pretty flat area, on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with man-made lagoons teeming with birds and wildlife. It is perfect for biking and running.
4. Great Restaurants, Pubs & Cafes
Kauai Beer Co., Ha Coffee, SEA Restaurant, Pietro’s Pizza, Pho Kauai, Kauai Pasta, Fish Express, Hualani’s are a few of my personal favorites. Mark’s Place and Harley’s Tropical Barbecue are also hidden local gems, where good food, generous portions, and reasonable prices drive the menu and have steady local enthusiasts.
5. Rural Setting
Nestled under the Haupu Mountain range, the views out here are green and lush. Farmland is abundant, with cows, horses, chickens, and roosters in the backdrop. From the neighborhood I live in, it feels like you are in the country, yet you are just minutes to everything the city of Lihue offers. I captured this shot on a neighborhood walk.
